Mekeel’s Corner Chapel Independence Day Celebration

In keeping with a long standing tradition Mekeel’s Corners Chapel will offer an Independence Day Celebration for the community on July 4th, 2021 at 12 pm. The Mekeel’s Chapel is planning to host this program as an OUTDOOR celebration, with a maximum of 50 people. The program will include musicians leading attendees in the singing of patriotic songs and hymns. There will also be a reading of select passages from our nation’s most important founding documents.

Juneteenth Celebration with the Nyack Library

Chiku Awali African Dance, Arts & Culture performs and teaches dances such as Lamba and Funga, which are dances of welcome. KouKou and Gundi are celebration dances for a good fishing catch. The dance Sounou, shows off dancing ability and beauty; and Soli, Kassa, and Sinte, are dances about the coming of age. In all African cultures, dances are participatory. Chiku Awali is proud to work with the Nyack Library in sharing the beauty and magic of these types of dances at the Juneteenth remembrance on June 26, 2021. At the event Chiku Awali staff, Yahaya Kamate, dance instructor and Gabriel Roxbury, drummer, will teach you, the audience, one of these traditional West African dances. Chiku Awali is a multifaceted community organization of African dancing, drumming, storytelling, arts, and cultural enrichment.
