Buddhist Monk to Deliver Dharma Talk at High Meadow School in Stone Ridge

Buddhist Monk Lama Tenzin will present a Dharma talk, discussing sand mandalas and responding to questions about spirituality on March 16 at 6 pm in the Performing Arts Center at High Meadow School, 3643 Main Street, in Stone Ridge. The public, ages 10 and up, is invited to the event. Traditionally, in India and Tibet, rocks are gathered from rivers and waterfalls and then crushed down to a fine white sand, which is cleaned and dyed many colors. Then the sand is formed into ancient designs with the use of a special metal funnel and rod. Some mandalas are made in just one day, others take months to complete. Once the sand painting is finished, with a blessing, the sand is swept up and returned to the earth from where it came; thus teaching the values of impermanence and sustainability.

Lama Tenzin, who lives in Geneva, NY, recently retired from Hobart and William Smith Colleges, where he taught Buddhist studies for several decades. Exiled from Tibet as a young boy, he became a monk in his new home, India, when he was just 11 years old. In the monastery he learned the art of the sand mandala. In 1988, the Dalai Lama permitted Tibetan monks to publically make sand mandalas.
