Based on a true story, I Never Saw Another Butterfly follows Raja Englanderova, a young girl living in the Jewish ghetto of Terezin during the Holocaust. Although they are living in a world of hardship, sorrow and misery, Raja and the other children find a ray of hope in Irena Synkova, who has dedicated her life to being a teacher for the children trapped in Terezin. In an effort to help the children escape the chaos and anguish around them, Irena helps them express their feelings through drawings and poetry. The real-life compilation of artwork from the children of Terezin is featured in the book “…I never saw another butterfly…,” edited by Hana Volaková. Meanwhile, Raja befriends a young man named Honza, who also lives in the ghetto. They grow close, despite the danger of the Nazis discovering their friendship. Together they unite the segregated boys’ and girls’ houses in the form of a secret newspaper. Although Raja’s story is filled with loss and despair, it is also permeated with love and hope. I Never Saw Another Butterfly takes the audience on a journey with Raja as she learns that the only way to survive is through the companionship forged out of this shared experience.
The show will be presented in Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center’s intimate Pavilion theatre and will be directed by Rich Hotaling, an award-winning actor and renowned Performing Arts Instructor with the Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Academy. I Never Saw Another Butterfly will feature a professional cast with Broadway guest stars as well as select students from the Performing Arts Academy, who will be playing the children.
